These are photographs of delegates attending the XVII International AIDS Conference held in Mexico City in August, 2008. The images were made with a simple digital point and shoot camera recording the movement of delegates along the carpeted concourse of the convention hall.
One day while attending the conference I grew tired and sat to rest. I was amazed by the sheer volume of people circulating in near constant motion as more than 25,000 delegates from all over the planet converged for meetings and presentations to address the AIDS pandemic.
As I rested and observed the flow of people, I concentrated primarily on the rhythmic movement of feet. I became interested in the occasional emergence of individuals and identities as coded through fashion or gesture, and how quickly these individuals ebbed into anonymity and abstraction.
