For my 2008 solo exhibition at the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA), I was interested in activating spaces both inside and outside the gallery.

Curator Peter Precourt gave me tremendous flexibility to work with both UMA students and the campus site.

For one of my outdoor pieces, I wrote a simple poem about the range of feelings one might experience while waiting.

I positioned the poem in a bus shelter located adjacent to the art gallery on campus, placing one line of the poem per pane of glass.

The poem reads:

Of all the things I feel
while standing here —
sheltered, unsure,
impatient, relieved,
uncomfortable, tired,
anxious, framed
— perhaps least expected,
but most appreciated is
this small but compelling
sense of hope.
